Francis William Aston, a British chemist and Physicist were born on September 1, 1877 in Harborne a small city near Birmingham. He went to private school until he was fourteen, and then he went into college. He first attended Malvern College. Two years later, he attended mason College. At Mason College he gained interested in organic chemistry. At the age of 21, he began research under P.F. Frankland. From the age of 23 to 26, he went to work for a brewing company. During this time, He still continues his independent studies in low pressure gas discharges and X-ray tubes. At the age of 26, he went back to research under Poynting until he was 31. The he took a one year vacation. He visits Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, Ceylon, Ad Mayala. At the age of 27, he became a lecturer in physic at the University of Birmingham. At the age of 29, he accepts Sir J.J. Thomson invitation to work as his assistant. He also became a member of Trinity, Where he lives the rest of his life. In 1914, Aston went to work for the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborought, studying chemical doping for areoplane material. Aston return to Cambridge in 1919, and build the first mass spectrometer. In 1922, he won the Nobel prize for chemistry on the mass spectrometer he builds. Aston died on November 20, 1945 in Cambridge.
